Fentanyl, Trade and Security: The New Triptych of China-U.S. Tensions

The tensions between China and the United States are no longer confined to semiconductors or Taiwan. Fentanyl and its chemical precursors have become a central issue, straddling public health, domestic security, and diplomacy.

Progress will depend on verifiable mechanisms: information exchanges, chemical traceability, customs controls, and coordinated prosecutions.

In a relationship already dominated by technological and military rivalry, health security is emerging as a trust indicator. If the two powers can cooperate on this front, they may at least preserve a shared space for risk management.
