Sahel: G5 Sahel Considers Deep Reform of Its Joint Military Command

The extraordinary meeting of the G5 Sahel chiefs of staff opened yesterday in N’Djamena under high tension. The joint force, tasked with coordinating the fight against jihadist groups in the region, has struggled to operate effectively following successive coups d’état.

Among the proposals discussed are a review of financing, a more flexible chain of command, and improved integration of local intelligence. Western partners have made their support conditional on substantial reforms.
