DRC: Government Announces Ceasefire Agreement with Armed Groups in the East

After weeks of intense negotiations in Nairobi, the Prime Minister confirmed the signing of a preliminary agreement. Areas affected by the conflict could see a gradual return to peace in the coming weeks, according to UN observers.

The agreement provides for the withdrawal of armed groups from civilian localities and the opening of humanitarian corridors for displaced populations. More than 800,000 people have been forced to flee their homes since the start of hostilities.

Local community representatives welcomed this initiative while calling for concrete guarantees. “We have heard too many promises,” declared an internally displaced persons spokesperson during a press conference in Goma.
